Collaborators in the scheme are normally national or regional representatives from the public health and microbiology institutes in each country. They have been nominated by their Ministry of Health as the official participants in the scheme. There are currently 35 countries in EWGLINET (24 EU and 11 non-EU) whose details can be found in the Collaborators section. (Although the United Kingdom is counted as a single country in the total figure given above, collaborating duties are split between the following parts of the country: England & Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.)

Collaborators report cases of travel associated legionnaires' disease to EWGLINET's coordinating centre in London. This is based in the offices of the UK Health Protection Agency - Centre for Infections.

The staff who manage EWGLINET from London are:

Dr Carol Joseph Project Coordinator
Ms Anitra Jones Administrative Assistant
Ms Katherine Ricketts Legionella Scientist
Ms Rekha Yadav Information Officer

Cases must fulfil the scheme's case definition. Collaborators from the participant countries can access a confidential copy of the data for the past two years. Older data, which have had the site names masked because the site has only been associated with a single case more than two years previously, are available to the collaborators on request to the coordinating centre.

New European Guidelines for operating the scheme and advising on control and prevention measures for reducing the incidence of travel associated legionella were introduced on 1 July 2002. Where national regulations differ from the advice in the guidelines, it is expected that countries adhere to their national regulations. However, the guidelines promote the standardisation of reporting and responding to cases of travel associated legionnaires' disease between all European countries. Countries adopting the guidelines are listed in the Collaborators section.
